Cherry Blossom Collection by Mikimoto

by Reema Farooqui

What is it about cherry blossoms that draws us to them? Is it their slight yet sweet fragrance, or how their delicate petals change colour from almost purplish to blush pink as they bud and flower and finally to white as they fall? Could it be that they signal the end of winter and the arrival of spring or that they bloom suddenly but then are gone in the blink of an eye?  Whatever the reason, we are all quite a bit fascinated by them.

Mikimoto has paid homage to this beautiful flower with their eponymous Cherry Blossom Collection. An evolving collection, which through the years has included many different iterations of the Cherry Blossom motif, each version of this collection perfectly, yet uniquely captures the fragile beauty of the sakura.

In the latest version of the collection, the necklace and earrings are standout pieces. The earrings are simple but distinctive. Delicate five-petal flowers, crafted with pink gold and adorned with pavé-set white diamonds, are set atop perfectly round white South Sea pearls. The contrast between the lustre of the pearls and the sculpted beauty of the flowers makes these earrings very striking.

The pendant is just as remarkable. Here again the details are outstanding. A cluster of five-petalled flowers and a tiny butterfly, all crafted in pink gold and pavé set with diamonds meet in the middle at a perfect white South Sea pearl. The imagery of finding a priceless pearl in a garden of cherry blossom flowers is subtle and charming.

However, it is the pieces from an earlier version of the Cherry Blossom collection, showcasing cultured Akoya pearls, white diamonds and plique à jour enamel, that really capture the essence of the sakura. Like an ode to the beauty of cherry blossoms, there is an elegance to these pieces which speaks volumes about the skill and artistry that has gone into crafting them. The plique à jour enamel is particularly lovely, sweetly echoing the beauty of the petals in delicate enamel. The combination of lustrous Akoya pearls, brilliant diamonds and brilliant plique à jour enamel comes together to create fine jewelry pieces that leave us enchanted.

Mikimoto’s Cherry Blossom jewellery collection is a jewelled distillation of the ephemeral beauty of the sakura flowers. Like a moment of time immortalized in gems and gold, this collection is both romantic and quite delightful.
