What is it about cherry blossoms that draws us to them? Is it their slight yet sweet fragrance, or how their delicate petals change colour, from purplish to blush pink as they bud and flower and finally to white as they shed? Could it be that they signal the end of winter and the arrival of spring or that they bloom suddenly but then are gone in the blink of an eye? Whatever the reason, we all seem to be a little fascinated by them.
Mikimoto pays homage to this beautiful flower with its eponymous Cherry Blossom Collection. There have been many iterations of the Cherry Blossom motif by Mikimoto, each one perfectly capturing the fragile beauty of sakura. However, their Cherry Blossom inspired collection includes earrings, rings, pendants and brooches, crafted in 18k gold and embellished with South Sea or Akoya pearls and white diamonds. Each piece is romantic and seems to hold a meaning which is as special as it is unique.
I particularly love the latest version of the collection, set in pink gold. The necklace and the earrings really spoke to me. The earrings are simple but distinctive. Delicate five petal flowers crafted with pink gold and adorned with pavé-set white diamonds, set atop a perfectly round white South Sea pearl, are designed to make you feel as if you are discovering pearls amidst a bunch of flowers.
The pendant is again quite remarkable. Here we see a small cluster of flowers but also a tiny butterfly, all crafted in pink gold and pavé set diamonds, with a perfect white South Sea pearl in the middle, completing the imagery of finding a pearl in a garden of cherry blossom flowers.
However, it is the Mikimoto brooch, ring and pendant with cultured Akoya pearls and plique à jour enamel that really capture the essence of the sakura in my opinion. Like an ode to the beauty of cherry blossoms, there is an elegance to these pieces which speaks volumes to the skill and artistry of Mikimoto pieces. The plique à jour enamel is a particularly fabulous element, sweetly echoing the beauty of the petals in delicate enamel. So, the combination of lustrous Akoya pearls and the old world enamelling technique of plique à jour come together to create fine jewelry pieces that capture the beauty of a moment in time, to enchant us forever.
As I look outside my bedroom window, I see the petals of cherry blossoms gently falling or being carried away by in the breeze. I again wonder why we are drawn to this flower, which brighten our days with its fleeting beauty. However, the Mikimoto Cherry Blossom collection has captured its beauty in gorgeous pearls, enamel and gold, to create almost magical pieces of jewelry.
