Chinese Couture, the latest high jewellery collection by Chow Tai Fook is the story of Chinese attire, written in exquisite gemstones and meticulous craftsmanship.
Rather than relying on familiar Chinese myths, legends and symbols, the Chinese Couture collection takes a refreshingly different route. This collection showcases the beauty of Chinese culture through its sartorial arts, elevating everyday items such as buttons, cords, ribbons and collars into high jewellery masterpieces.
Led by Nicholas Lieou, Creative Director of High Jewellery at Chow Tai Fook, the collection has a multilayered, cross-cultural design language and aesthetic. Traditional Chinese dressmaking becomes the inspiration for high jewellery design, Eastern symbolism is given a contemporary expression, and traditional Chinese craftsmanship is used to create pieces with a global appeal.
In addition, the collection features jadeite jade and yellow gold, two jewellery materials that have been deeply cherished in Chinese culture for centuries, alongside a stunning selection of top-quality coloured gemstones, pearls and diamonds. Thus, the collection also strikes a harmonious balance between traditional and contemporary gem choices.
The second chapter in the brand’s high jewellery journey, Chinese Couture builds on the success of the brand’s inaugural Timeless Harmony collection, an ode to Chinese culture, history and architecture.
Chinese Couture – The Sartorial Codes
Traditional Chinese dressmaking has a long and rich history. To distill it into a one high jewellery collection would have been a monumental, if not an impossible undertaking. Instead, Lieou and his design team decided to focus on the five essential elements of Chinese couture and adornment that have endured and evolved over centuries and across different eras.
These include jadeite jade, silk ribbons, cords, button knots, cloud collars, all of which have continued to embellish Chinese attire over centuries. Through these five design elements, Lieou was able to translate classic Chinese dressmaking details into the design codes of a sumptuous high jewellery collection.
Cord
Cords were an essential part of Chinese garments. From a single strand of raw silk thread to a woven cord, they represent connection and continuity in Chinese culture, being both supple and resilient. This became the inspiration for the collection’s cord pieces.
The Cord necklace captures the beauty of a single, twisted strand of silk thread. Embellished with diamonds that catch the light at every angle, the necklace moves with the body without feeling rigid or twisting in on itself.
It also features a large, deeply colour-saturated and rare 56.74-carat Melo pearl. What’s more, the necklace’s clasp is discreetly concealed, so that the entire piece appears to be one long, silken thread of diamonds.
Ribbon
Continuing the same theme as the cord pieces, the ribbon designs elevate silk ribbons into marvels of goldsmithing art.
The Ribbon necklace features white South Sea pearls with yellow gold spacers. However, the centrepiece of the necklace is a ribbon knot crafted from 22K yellow gold, finished with a diamond studded fringe.
The satiny texture of the ribbon has been crafted using an Eastern filigree technique that evokes the delicacy of silk as well as its underlying strength. This millennia-old filigree technique allows the lustre of the yellow gold to shine through, while still creating a sense of fluidity and movement in the centre piece.
Button Knot
Button knots are the quintessential detail of Chinese attire. Corded knots are fastened into corded loops, and while these fastenings are essentially functional, they also represent something deeper – connection.
Glossy jadeite jade sit atop diamond-set white gold loops, creating a parallel between function and beauty in the Button Knot pieces. The intricate details of these pieces showcase both ingenuity of design and exceptional craftsmanship.
Cloud Collar
‘Yun’ or the cloud collar is another element of Chinese attire that has been interpreted in Chinese Couture. Rather than reproducing the collar as a literal cloud motif, the collection deconstructs it, focusing on a single, gentle lower curve.
The Yun brooches have an open, asymmetrical design, in which proportion and negative space are used to great effect. Representing the collar, the pieces evoke clouds as they drift slowly across the sky, making them, perhaps, the most lyrical pieces of the collection.
Jade Ombré
The Jade Ombré pieces pay homage to Fei Cui, a material in Chinese culture and civilization.
The pieces in this series are a masterclass in gem materials, design and craftsmanship. Featuring both green jadeite jade and emeralds cabochons of different sizes, the subtle yet perceptible gradation of colour between the two materials evokes the brush strokes of traditional Chinese paintings.
Additionally, the white gold setting seems to disappear between both the pavé- and reverse-set diamonds, allowing captivating play of light between the different facets of the diamonds, and creating an extraordinary display of sparkle and brilliance.
As the name suggests, the Jade Ombré pieces play with colour, showcasing the mesmerising character of this remarkable gem material.
Chinese Couture – Translating Chinese Attire into Contemporary High Jewellery
Chinese Couture draws inspiration from recognisable elements of traditional Chinese attire. However, instead of simply reproducing those elements, Lieou abstracts their forms and textures to create a collection that feels both modern and sleek.
The clean lines and minimalist silhouettes give these pieces a sense of restraint, but the collection is also defined by a refined sense of opulence expressed through exceptional gemstones and intricate craftsmanship. This balance is particularly effective, since the pieces are rich in precious materials and jewellery making techniques, while remaining distinctly contemporary, with a global appeal.
What makes Chinese Couture particularly compelling as a high jewellery collection is the way its cultural and sartorial references remain recognisable without becoming literal. A knot, a ribbon or a silk cord, can still be discerned in the designs, but it is their reinterpretation through pearls, gemstones, diamonds, and gold, that make them remarkable. Thus, the collection never veers from its clear cultural foundation yet maintains a contemporary aesthetic.
This approach also demonstrates how Chow Tai Fook is developing a distinct high jewellery identity, rooted in its cultural heritage. Moreover, the collection also demonstrates how Chinese craftsmanship together with traditional Chinese gem and jewellery materials can provide the foundation for a high jewellery collection that speaks to an international audience.
