The Select Jewelry Show is a private, trade-only jewellery show that takes place every fall. Only a handpicked group of exhibitors, jewellery designers and retail jewellers are invited to this event.
The show is smaller, more exclusive and more personal – three characteristics that not only set it apart from other larger shows but also ensure that both vendors and retailers return to the show year after year.
This year the show celebrates its 15th anniversary. More than a decade and a half ago, the show started as a single location event in Dallas. Today, it has evolved into a staggered regional show held at three locations (Dallas, Mohegan Sun and Washington DC), during September.
The timing of the show is ideal for both vendors and retailers. Taking place at the beginning of fall, the jewellery trends seen on the show floor set the tone for the rest of the year, particularly leading up to the holiday season.
One thing that stood out during the Dallas show was the contemporary designs of the jewels being exhibited. These pieces were stylish and very modern. Some were geometric, some abstract in design while others used negative space and asymmetry in uniquely confident ways.
Here are the top trends spied on the floor of the Select Jewelry Show Dallas.
The Golden Rule
Despite the astronomical rise in gold prices, yellow gold jewellery has been popular since the start of the year. At the Select Jewelry Show in Dallas, yellow gold still reigned supreme. Its true beauty was revealed in the different finishes on the jewellery pieces. From highly polished pieces and pieces with soft, satiny finishes to intricately crafted, statement pieces, yellow gold was a hit at the show.

Tantalizing Tanzanite
Tanzanite is certainly on a roll this year. Flying high in the summer jewellery shows, it continues its hold on the hearts of jewellery lovers at the beginning of fall. Large, finely faceted, and deeply saturated Tanzanites as well as dome-shaped, cabochons were popular at the show.
The one thing that makes Tanzanites so attractive is their blueish-purple colour. For many years, it was often used in fine jewellery as a close yet more affordable substitute for sapphires, especially in the case of larger gems. Today, it is coveted for its own unique colours which can be blue and indigo with a hint of purple, or more purple and violet with a whisper of blue. The range of Tanzanite colours on exhibit at the Select show clearly underscored the demand for this gem.

Bejewelled Wonders of Nature
If there was one motif that stood out at the Select Jewelry Show, it was the delicately fashioned butterfly. Detailed and elegant, some jewelled butterflies had wings picked out with diamonds. Others, suffused with opalescent and iridescent colours, had wings that were drenched in the hues of nature. The butterfly motif graced earrings, pendants and rings alike.
Similar to the butterfly motif, some other insects also found their way into fine jewellery. For instance, dragonfly brooches shone bright with their coloured gems, lustrous pearls and incredible design and craftsmanship.
A highly detailed, multi-gem high jewellery serpent cuff bracelet with a sugarloaf cabochon sapphire, emeralds and diamonds, by Picchiotti Fine Jewellery, was a popular piece, reaffirming our fascination with this sinuous motif.
Floral motifs remained a sought-after choice. And they were as varied as they were captivating.

Alluring Opals
At the Select Jewelry Show in Dallas, opal jewellery created a bejewelled stir. Opals mesmerize with their unique play of colour. What’s more, each opal is a one-of-a-kind marvel of nature, illuminated with a moving kaleidoscope of rainbow hues.
From large “look at me” statement pieces to delicate inlays in a surround of diamonds and gold, opal jewellery left a definite impression on the show attendees.

Mother of Pearl Magic
Mother-of-Pearl is a luminous, iridescent gem material, favoured by jewellery brands and designers alike. The beauty of this gem material lies in the way it interacts with light, seeming to glow from within.1
White Mother-of-Pearl remained a popular choice for many jewellery brands.
Either set with diamonds, coloured gems or with Abalone shell inlay, Mother-of-Pearl shimmered on the show floor.

Colour Coded
Last, but certainly not the least, exceptional coloured gems graced fine and high jewellery pieces at the Select Jewelry Show in Dallas. These included the big three – sapphires, emeralds and rubies – as well as fancy coloured natural diamonds.
In addition, it included many other luminous coloured gems such as spinels, topaz, aquamarines and hard stones such as malachite and turquoise.
Coral was also popular at the show, as were pearls. White as well as naturally coloured pearls were showcased in different ways. On their own as necklace strands, sets of matching earrings or single pearls for rings as well as set in jewellery pieces with other coloured gems, pearls garnered considerable attention.
