Pearl Jewellery Pieces for A Novice Collector
Doyle Auctioneers & Appraisers are currently having their Fine Jewelry Sale in New York. Online bidding is live and the pieces on offer are nothing short of fabulous. The auction itself will start on at 10:00 am EDT Tuesday, May 5th. However, absentee online bids can be placed right up to 8:00 am EDT on the auction day.
I am fascinated by auctions and the pearl jewellery pieces that come up for sale. Sometimes the most unexpected piece may come up and that is just awesome! As a lover of pearl jewellery pieces and a beginner collector, I am thrilled by the selection of pearl pieces at Doyle’s Fine Jewelry Sale. The sale features quite a few very stylish pieces adorned with pearls. Even so, for someone with a preference for antique or vintage, or signed jewellery from one of the big jewellery houses, the offering does not disappoint.
I found myself perusing the lots with an eye of a novice collector. As such, I found many lots to my liking.
Here are the ones that really spoke to me:
I am particularly enamoured of Lot 31, a Pair of Cartier White Gold and South Sea Cultured Pearls Ear Clips. This is a signed pair of ear clips and the South Sea Pearls are magnificent. At a little more than 18mm, these round pearls are lustrous and perfectly matched in colour and overtones. The price point for the lot is very accessible, considering the quality of the pearls and the fact that these are Cartier ear clips! So, if you want to start your pearl jewelry collection with a true statement piece, I will certainly recommend Lot 31. Estimate: $1000-$1500 USD
Next, my attention has been captured by Lot 33, a signed Ruser Platinum Baroque Freshwater Pearl and Diamond Brooch. An intricately crafted brooch, in true Ruser style it has two gorgeous Freshwater pearls. Beautifully articulated Platinum leaves set with diamonds highlight the shape and lustre of the pearls. If you look closely, you will also be able to see the wonderful pink, blue and green overtones on the pearls. This piece is definitely a conversation starter and if that is what you want to start with then this Lot 33 might be for you. I see a lot of versatility in this piece. It will be great to dress up a casual outfit or add a point of focus on a more formal attire. Estimate: $1,200-$1,800 USD
Lot 49, Russian Antique Gold, Turquoise Enamel, Split Pearl and Diamond Bangle Bracelet really jumped out at me. With makers marks and Russian assay marks, c 1863, this bangle bracelet is a piece of wearable history. The floral pattern and rich turquoise coloured enamel against gold is lovely. The split pearl and the rose cut diamonds arranged in a night sky motif, are just as appealing. I love this bangle bracelet, not just for the white split pearl but for its superb craftsmanship, its colours and the fact that it is such a beautiful piece of antique jewelry. Being a bangle bracelet that can be easily slipped on, there is no reason not to wear it! If you are looking to start your jewelry collection with a one of a kind antique piece, then this bangle bracelet is for you. Estimate: $3,000-$5,000 USD
My next choice is a Pair of White Gold, Cabochon Aquamarine, Freshwater and Cultured Pearl and Diamond Ear Clips, Lot 157. There is something fun and joyful about these ear clips. The gemmy cabochon Aquamarines are balanced with the lustrous white, creamy white and pink pearls. Interspersed among the aquamarines and pearls, diamonds are set to sparkle and shine. I would choose these ear clips because they add a pop of colour and a point of interest. In addition, their size makes them just right for everyday wear and also for something to dress up a more formal look. Estimate: $1,000-1,500 USD
Lastly, I can never resist a David Webb piece, particularly when it is at auction. Lot 198 is a spectacular pair of Gold, Platinum, South Sea Cultured Pearl, Diamond and Enamel David Webb Ear Clips. This is again a signed piece and it appears to be in very good condition. The pearls, let me just say, are marvellous. Round, lustrous with a hint of rose and green orient. The pavé-set diamonds set them off to perfection while the gold and black enamel really helps focus your attention on this piece. If you love David Webb’s jewelry, then this is not to be missed and will be a good starter piece for your pearl jewelry collection. Estimate: $4,000-$6,000 USD
So, if you haven’t checked out the Fine Jewelry Sale at Doyle, now is your chance! These are the pieces I am rooting for! What are your favourite pieces from this sale?
