Beautiful Pearls at Sotheby’s Fine Jewels Online Auction in New York

by Reema Farooqui

Sotheby’s Fine Jewels Online Auction is currently live in New York and there is a fabulous offering of jewels and fine jewelry. Online bidding started on April 20th and will continue through April 29th.

My interest in the auction was first and foremost pearls, but many of the other jewelry pieces on offer were also quite amazing. The pearl jewelry selection for the auction is relatively small, but even then, they are outstanding.

Here are the pieces I loved the most:

Lot 364: Mabé Pearl, Enamel and Diamond Ring, David Webb

Estimate: 5,000 – 7,000 USD

This is a very eye catching ring. The large creamy white mabé pearl measures approximately 22.2 x 21.8 mm and has good lustre. Showcasing the pearl is the octagonal frame in deep and rich black enamel with brilliant white diamonds in the corners. What drew me to this ring is the fabulous octagonal design, but then it is a David Webb. This is a true statement ring and all the colours, from white and black to gold, make it all the more striking.

Lot 397: Gold, Gem Set and Cultured Pearl ‘Celtaura’ Necklace, Bulgari and Pair of Ear Clips

Estimate: 30,000 – 50,000 USD

This is truly a magnificent piece of jewelry! Just the variety of gemstones in this set is breathtaking- diamonds, citrines, amethysts, peridots as well as pink and green tourmalines. The creamy white cultured pearls have a lovely lustre and the way the pearls have been mounted in this set is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of Bulgari. In addition, the ear clips have mismatching coloured gemstones which I love! There is something fabulous about this set. The colours, the design and craftsmanship, come together and create a piece that is nothing short of exceptional!

Lot 408: Cultured Pearl and Gem Set Necklace

Estimate: 7,000 – 9,000 USD

A gorgeous necklace of lavender cultured pearls (from the colour I am assuming of freshwater origin), accented by rondelles and boules with pavé-set amethysts and garnets. The pearls are round, with excellent lustre and a lovely lavender colour and to me they look gem quality. The use of the necklace spacers with amethysts and garnets continues the overall lavender – violet theme of the necklace but gives it texture and sparkle, hence making it more modern and edgy. At a little over 36 inches in length, this necklace allows for versatility, single row as an opera or doubled as a two strand princess necklace. Both looks with this necklace, I am sure, will be elegant and glamourous.

There are several other outstanding pieces to check out as well. Lot 367, Diamond on Diamond Ring by Graff, Lot 336, Aquamarine and Diamond ‘Wrapped Heart’ Brooch by Verdura as well as Lot 328 Emerald and Diamond Ear clips by Bucellati, with very fine and delicate details, are all noteworthy.

Now that you know my choices, please do share your in the comments below 🙂
